A darkfield condenser isn’t something you’d find in your favorite science-fiction movie. No, it’s a real life object, and it’s an integral part of microscopes that are designed to provide a dark field around an observed sample to enhance its contrast. This is referred to as darkfield microscopy, and darkfield condensers are what turn a regular scope into a darkfield microscope.
In a normal microscope, regular condensers are used to gather light and then directed in a concentrated stream through the sample being observed. This creates images viewed against a bright white field, and it’s often called brightfield microscopy. A darkfield condenser, however, does the opposite in that it uses internal filters and stops to reduce the amount of diffused light that emerges at the other end.
Darkfield microscopy is best used when examining transparent, unstained samples that absorb very little or no light on their own. This includes live bacteria, cells and tissues, insects, marine organisms, fibers, hairs, and protozoa, to name but a few. If you’re looking for a new or replacement darkfield condenser for your microscope, you won’t find a better selection than Microscope.com!
