A digital microscope is a modern take on the optical microscope you've been using for decades.
A stereo microscope can be a digital microscope. Likewise, a compound microscope can be too. It's the digital microscope camera that brings them into this category.
Digital microscopes use traditional microscope optics to create a digital image that can be shared with your class or colleagues on an LCD screen, like a computer monitor, or streamed to an HD projector with a simple USB cable.
The exception to this modern take on the traditional optical microscope is the Dino-Lite handheld digital microscope. We'll come back to these.
Where ergonomics are important, digital microscopes rule
Microscopy isn't always easy on the body. You're hunched over the eyepiece for hours every day, tinkering with the magnification on your device. Your shoulders and neck start bothering you. The strain on your eyes causes headaches.
A digital microscope system allows you to sit more comfortably. You aren't hunched over your sample. You're looking at the live image under the same magnification power, but it's on your computer screen in high resolution.
If you still like to get down in the weeds with your sample, you can work in a half-digital, half-optical setup. Attach a high resolution digital camera to the trinocular head of your existing optical microscope. The digital camera gives your traditional rig image capture capabilities, allows you to sit back and upright, and sends the image in real-time to almost any device with a USB port.
A purpose-built digital microscope doesn't have an eyepiece. It doesn't need it. The same levels of zoom you find in a compound microscope or stereo microscope are available. The image just goes straight to the image sensor and out to your screen.
A digital stereo microscope is used in the same applications as an optical stereo microscope, where a 3d image is needed:
Quality control in manufacturing
Geological sample exploration
Watchmaking
Entomology
Archaeology
Electronics manufacturing
and more...
A digital compound microscope, with its high magnification, is well suited for deeper exploration into the smallest corners of our world. Things like:
Blood cells
Bacteria
Tissue samples
and more...
About those Dino-Lite digital microscopes
Dino-Lite is a digital, portable microscope manufacturer with over 50 different handheld models. They're small and handy and easy to use, with built-in software and LED illumination.
They're used by hobbyists in jewelry and collectibles (think stamps, coin collectors, etc); in industrial quality control (where the ease of handheld maneuverability, a robust magnification range, and simple picture-taking controls make documenting processes easy); in education (students love how easy they are to use, and the easy camera controls keep them engaged); and in other applications where you can't trade flexibility for quality.
