In no particular order, the three most important things about your new magnifying lamp are:
The lens
The light
The stand / adjustable arm
Whether you plan to use your magnifying lamp in a salon and spa, or in a dentists office, jeweler's shop, at your kitchen table painting miniatures or assembling scale models, or in your electronics repair shop, the same things ring true. All these pieces come together to reduce eye strain during your focused work.
So how do you separate the good magnifying lamps from the not-so-good?
About the magnification lens
A glass lens is better than a plastic lens.
Glass is a better magnifier, and you get a clearer look at your subject when looking through a glass lens.
Lens diopter refers to the amount of curvature a lens will have. More curvature means a thicker lens, more magnification, and a higher diopter number.
The most popular magnifying lamp we carry has a premium 5 diopter lens. It provides the well-established best magnification level for magnifier lamp applications. From hobbyists to dentists to jewelers, a 5 diopter lens (providing 2.25X magnification power) is the preferred magnifying lens.
It's also worth noting that the quality of the glass matters. The premium 5 diopter lens is made of crown glass with the optical quality of prescription eyewear. It will last a long time.
*A note about focal length and working distance. A 5 diopter lens gives a focal length, and working distance, of 8 inches. That's plenty of space for your hands, tools, and whatever subject you're working on.
About the light
Yes, you need a lighted magnifier.
And it should be LED lighting.
A 600 lumen LED lamp gives the brightness you need to view your subject in true-to-life color. LED light, as you probably know, lasts really long. You won't have to replace a bulb for 15 years. And it gives the right color temperature to match the look of daylight.
You want quality lighting that reflects natural daylight, and that means your LED magnifying lamp should have at least 35 LED bulbs lighting your subject. For your long sessions looking through the lens, it'll make a huge difference in eye fatigue.
Plus, this isn't just a glorified magnifying glass. The magnifying light should reflect the quality of the work you plan to do.
About the stand / adjustable arm
There are parts of the stand that are hard to quantify, but they should exist. The arm should be smooth, but stiff enough that it holds in a position exactly where you position it.
For that, we only recommend swing arm stands.
We don't recommend the flexible neck, gooseneck-type arm for a magnification lamp. The stability will wear out long before the rest of your magnifying lamp, and it will become a nuisance in your work.
The stand generally comes in two formats. A magnifying desk lamp (or table lamp) and a magnifying floor lamp. The desk lamp-style also comes with a flat base or a clamp.
The floor stand is, obviously, larger and heavier, and takes up more space. For that reason, we also almost exclusively recommend the desk lamp.
The greatest stability comes from a clamp-style magnifying lamp that can attach directly to your work surface. It's as stable as your entire table - which you'll never knock over.
A curated selection of magnifying lamps
Magnifying lamps last a long time. A good one will repay its value to your hobby or business thousands of times over. The price is good, even on the most expensive magnifying lamp we carry, so choose the unit you want. You'll be glad you did.
