We live in a 3-dimensional world. Sometimes you need to look at an image with 3-dimensional magnification. Sometimes you need to look at your subject under low magnification, or with a lower overall magnification range, so you can see small details, but not cellular-small details. Stereo microscopes give scientists the ability to observe and manipulate small, but not miniscule, subjects.
A stereo microscope might have a zoom range from 0.5x to 70x or so - perfect for things like electronics repair or gemology or selling jewelry (more on that later).
What are stereo microscopes used for?
Because of the level of magnification stereo microscopes offer, they are commonly used in biology for dissections. That's why you hear biologists talking about working under the dissecting microscope. There is enough working distance between the stage and the objective lens for scientists to tinker with whatever is on the stage.
Stereo microscopes are used in other applications where a low power microscope with a wide field of view is needed, including:

Precision electronics work on circuit boards, where low magnification is ideal and an added microscope camera can document your work easily
Entomology, where a dissecting microscope helps identify species without actually dissecting the subject
Lapidary work, where moderate zoom and bright, even light allow for precise evaluation of gems and stones
Watchmaking, when even illumination helps with eye fatigue during long periods looking eyepiece
Archaeology, where the stereoscopic microscope's less powerful lens and distance between the objective and stage makes the meticulous work of cleaning and analyzing fossils possible
How do stereo microscopes work?
Stereo microscopes create a 3D image with a separate objective lens and eyepiece for each eye. The image is stereoscopic. Each eye sees the same image at a slightly different angle - the way the human eye is meant to see things. That's why it's good for looking at opaque samples. The user still gets a good sense of the texture of the surface under examination.
For most users, most people, both eyes don't work exactly the same. If you wear eyeglasses, the power of your prescription in one lens is different than the other. You can compensate for this with the diopter on your binocular stereo microscopes without any negative impact on the eyepiece magnification of that objective.
A stereo microscope is a type of light microscope, and it can be used in a binocular microscope or trinocular format. The trinocular stereo microscope head allows users to add a digital microscope camera for easy documentation subjects.
Stereo microscopy is the gold standard in an endless number of industrial quality control workflows because the three-dimensional image produced by the dual ocular lens is ideal for picking out intricate surface formations.
Because a binocular stereo microscope is not a high power microscope, the numerical aperture isn't important.
What type of light source do stereo microscopes use?
LED illumination is the best kind of illumination for most models of stereo microscope.
LED lights are cool, long-lasting, and draw very little energy. Compared to halogen (which is still useful in many microscopy applications with the low magnification of a stereo microscope), they are more versatile and give a clearer, cooler look at your subject.
Both transmitted light (brightfield, darkfield, polarized) and reflected light (polarized, fluorescence) observations are available for stereo microscopes.
What accessories are best for stereo microscopes?
For lots of electronics and jewelry-related applications, a Barlow lens is an invaluable accessory. Increase or reduce your magnification and working distance with a Barlow lens that maintains 100% of the optical quality of your microscope.
A sturdy stereo microscope stand with an articulating arm is a necessity for most industrial inspection applications. The microscope head mounts quickly and easily on the boom stand, and can swap out quickly for special microscopy applications when needed.
What about the different types of magnification available in a stereo microscope?
Some stereo microscopes are fixed magnification models, meaning they dont' have any zoom magnification capabilities.
A dual power stereo microscope (not surprisingly) gives users two magnification powers to work with. The only way to change the magnification is by purchasing a different pair of stereo microscope eyepieces.
The most common stereo microscopes have a zoom range that users can fiddle with through the simple zoom knob.
Stereo microscopes are great for young learners.
The magnification on a stereo zoom microscope is more relatable for young scientists. The magnification level doesn't turn a butterfly wing into a strange cellular arrangement. It shows a close up image of that obviously-identifiable wing - all the neat colors and shapes.
They understand more what they see through the eyepiece tube. They don't have to be as precise with the focus knob as they do on a higher magnification optical microscope. The image they see makes sense to them.
An affordable zoom stereo microscope a great way to introduce your kids to the stuff that could be a big part of their whole lives.
Add a 20x, 15x, or 10x eyepiece for more customized magnification, and add a microscope digital camera adapter to display collaboration, reduce eye strain, and show your kids what you do on take-your-kids-to-work day.
