A digital veterinary microscope is a valuable tool in any veterinary clinic.
It allows you to enhance your training program for veterinary technicians.
It gives your veterinary practice enhanced recordkeeping capabilities (with the addition of a digital camera that turns it into a digital microscope). Images of abnormalities seen on blood films or tissue cytology preparations, urine sediment evaluations, parasite evaluations, and other diagnostic tests can be used to document findings in a patient's record - an especially valuable tool when handling legal issues that arise from diagnosis or treatment of patients.
And a microscope provides veterinary professionals like you with a powerful customer education platform, where you can show clients exactly what you see down the objective and give them the context they never had before.
A digital microscope also empowers your veterinary clinic to bring a more complete diagnostic service model in-house, where you can diagnose tissue, cell, or other animal samples in your own laboratory. With more education, you can even offer in-house cytology services (and other clinics can start sending their cytology requests your way for added revenue).
So what makes a good microscope for veterinary medicine?
The most complete microscopy solution for every veterinarian should include the following. However, not every feature is a necessity. It depends on the type sof services you want to bring into your clinic. If you aren't sure what you need, it's best to call us. We can talk about your very unique needs.
A trinocular head with a digital camera attachment.
An operating mechanical stage
Brightfield illumination (and a built-in Abbe condenser)
Infinity objectives
A veterinary series microscope to be used in clinical pathology in your laboratory falls under the "compound microscope" category.
A compound microscope allows you to look at the cell structure of a specimen. Your in-house clinical pathologist can look at a blood smear or other sample on glass slides and diagnose blood and tissue diseases with high confidence at 1000X magnification.
Certainly, advanced illumination techniques like the following are used in veterinary schools and more equipped specialist diagnostic laboratories:
Phase contrast
Darkfield
Fluorescence
...but most work your clinic will benefit from under the lens uses brightfield illumination. The most thorough type of illumination is called Koehler illumination, and it can be augmented or supported by additional LED illumination attached to or separate from the instrument itself.
Additionally, most veterinary clinics use at least one microscope with a double eyepiece (a binocular microscope). A trinocular model, at a slightly higher price point, allows you to look down the binocular eyepiece while capturing video and images simultaneously through the camera attached to the trinocular head (a trinocular microscope has three eyepieces, as you probably guessed).
The laboratory in your clinic can provide even more income than it already does. You just have to invest in the right tools.
