Summary
The OM36 compound 1000x microscope has been a perennial favorite of our customers and for good reason. Available in binocular or trinocular format and with either halogen or rechargeable LED illumination, it offers good quality optics, a host of professional features and solid industrial design. It is a classic, affordable Omano compound microscope that has proven popular with Middle Schools, at the high school level, and through Medical Schools, and with 1000x magnification being pretty much the limit when it comes to visible light microscopy, you can clearly see the inner workings of stained bacteria with a 1000x microscope.
Four rear-facing objectives, an integrated, double-layered mechanical stage and halogen or LED illumination combine with excellent design and construction to make an enduring microscope that is simply better quality than the OM118 series. Unsurprisingly, this 1000x magnification scope is backed by an Omano lifetime limited warranty.

Why Students Love It
The OM36 compound 1000x microscope has been a perennial favorite of schools, and for good reason. It’s versatile enough to train basic microscopy to fifth-grade students but also fits specifications for medical schools in the U.S.
The OM36 is built with young, learning students in mind. From 25 years of building microscopes, we picked up some ways to incorporate features to interest and engage your students throughout your lesson plan.
It’s built with a solid industrial design, and 1000x magnification (being pretty much the limit when it comes to visible light microscopy). Magnification of this caliber helps your students see the deepest inner workings of stained bacteria.
Let’s Get Optical
The OM36 compound student microscope includes a binocular or trinocular Seidentopf microscope head inclined at 45 degrees, creating a comfortable and ergonomic working posture for students. This helps them stay engaged with the microscope throughout your entire lesson. The head also rotates 360 degrees for flexible viewing positions, making in-class student collaboration a breeze.
When your students take a look at specimens under the OM36, they get crisp and clear imagery. We build our student microscopes with glass optics to help your students get accustomed to professional-grade microscopy equipment they may encounter in the future.
Check out the optical features that help get students engaged:
A rear-facing quadruple nosepiece.
Two wide field WF10x eyepieces for improved viewing.
Diopters integrated into both oculars to enable individual eye focusing.
A head adjustable through 55-75mm to adapt to different interpupillary distances.
Four parcentered, coated, parfocal, 185mm achromatic objectives (4x, 10x, 40x spring, 100x spring, oil immersion).
40x and 100x spring-loaded objectives to reduce damage risk to slides.
Magnification levels include 40x, 100x, 400x, and 1,000x (unless optional higher power eyepieces are used).
Focus on the Stage
The OM36 microscope features an integrated, double-layered, graduated mechanical stage that measures 110mm x 120mm. The range of X-Y movement is 70mm x 25mm and the stage includes a spring-loaded slide clamp for exact positioning of the specimen.
The stage is controlled by convenient dropdown, coaxial coarse/fine controls so students can make adjustments without taking their eyes off the specimen, which improves the user experience and helps keep your students engaged.
Other features include:
A rack stop that increases safety by ensuring that the stage does not interfere with the objectives and damage the slides.
A slip clutch control to mitigate the risk of damaging the focus controls through overextension.
Farewell, Weak Illumination!
AThe OM36 compound student microscope is built with a professional Abbe 1.25 N condenser with an Iris diaphragm for optimal adjustments.
The illumination options are all yours with the OM36. Choose between transmitted 6V 20W halogen illumination or LED illumination that provides variable intensity.
Swap Out that Hard Eyepiece for Soft Imaging
Technology is a part of our day-to-day lives. Getting students off technology and putting them onto a microscope is a challenge for many educators.
What if there was a way to combine a love of technology with a passion for microscopy?
You can pair the OM36 with a Summit Series digital microscope camera to make this compound microscope into a digital microscope in an instant. The Summit Series cameras are known for their remarkable color resolution and color sensitivity, meaning your students can study bright, clear, and vivid images under their scope.
In addition, the included 0.5x reducing lens makes for an image that is significantly closer to that seen through the eyepieces with the naked eye. A Summit Series camera comes with robust documentation and measuring software that your students can use to manipulate and share their discoveries.
The Summit Series microscope cameras are compatible with a C/CS mount, 23mm eyepiece adapter, and 30mm and 30.5mm collars (fitting almost any other microscope).
Other features of the Summit Series microscope cameras include:
Fast refresh rates
Auto/manual exposure

- Storage in JPG, BMP, TIFF, TGA, and RAW format, so images can be used across a range of platforms.
The cameras also work just fine with your existing TWAIN, DirectX, and Image Capture (MAC only) software. You can also download K2View from our site.
Excellent image reproduction with 0.5x Reducing Lens.
No fuss, just focus. Many competitively priced digital microscope cameras magnify the image through the eyepiece, so the image you see on your monitor doesn’t accurately represent what you see looking down the scope with your own eyes. That’s not good enough for you. We counter that by including a 0.5x reducing lens. This prevents over-magnification and produces real images. You can trust what you see.
Summit K2 series digital microscope cameras already work in applications spanning industries. They can be retrofitted onto most existing optical microscope models, and come standard on Omano digital microscopes.
They add some swagger to your passion for microscopy and make sharing a lot easier. You don’t have to go on your microscopy adventures alone anymore.
Compatibility:
- Includes 23mm C mount adapter (additional adapters can be purchased to fit future microscopes)
- Optional calibration slide for accurate measurements
Modern Technology:
